Every lid we sell ships as bare wood, so it takes paint and stain well. Here's the simple way to do it.
Pick a side
Each lid has a smooth wood grain side and a bead-board side with grooves. The smooth side is easier for lettering and stencils. The bead-board side looks great with a single solid color because the grooves catch the light.
What you need
- Fine sandpaper (220 grit)
- A tack cloth or damp rag
- Primer if you're using light colors
- Exterior acrylic paint, chalk paint, or wood stain
- A clear sealer if it's going outside
Steps
- Lightly sand the side you're painting and wipe off the dust.
- Prime if needed, let it dry.
- Paint two thin coats instead of one thick one. Let each coat dry fully.
- Add stencils, lettering, or a monogram once the base coat is dry.
- Seal it with a clear coat if it will live on the porch or outside.
Ideas
- Fall: pumpkin orange with a stenciled leaf
- Weddings: white with the couple's initials
- Crab feasts: leave it natural and just seal it
- Farm stand: chalkboard paint so you can write the price on it
